Halcyon Opportunity Intensive (2020-2023)
The Opportunity Intensive began in 2020 with a cohort of nine social entrepreneurs and a commitment to accelerating the impact-driven future of business in our backyard. While Opportunity Zones have been a polarizing topic, they provide a valuable jumping off point for identifying communities in our region that have been historically under-resourced to ensure innovation and investment remain in the hands of those who know and love these communities best.
Since the launch of this fellowship, Halcyon successfully supported six Opportunity Intensive cohorts in 2020, 2021, Spring 2022, Fall 2022, Spring 2023, and Fall 2023.
Pirl Technology
Pirl is building next-generation electric vehicle (EV) charging stations to accelerate the transition to electrified transport. While the adoption of EVs is rapidly increasing, the charging infrastructure needed for mass adoption has lagged.
We’re at a critical time where over 90% of the infrastructure required for the adoption of EVs is yet to be built. Transportation accounts for 29% of greenhouse emissions, and because EVs generate only half the emissions of internal combustion engines, they are critical for the attainment of climate goals.
Pirl is building charging stations that charge rapidly and come with a delightful user experience. Their stations are designed to be long-lasting, and yet retain a low maintenance profile to reduce e-waste. Their mission is to transform charging stations into engines of economic growth to accelerate their deployment.
Aymara
The core mission of Aymara revolves around ensuring the safety of artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity. With this objective in mind, Aymara aims to create and implement testing procedures that effectively evaluate bias, misinformation, and inaccuracy present in large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT.
The current approach of manually reviewing LLM output to identify bias, misinformation, and inaccuracy is not scalable given the increasing number of LLMs and their widespread adoption. To address this challenge, programmatically measurable tests are essential, enabling efficient and comprehensive evaluation of these three critical aspects.
Furthermore, many model developers, enterprises, and third-party auditors may lack the technical capabilities, domain expertise, and human resources necessary to develop their own tests for bias, misinformation, and inaccuracy within LLMs. As a result, a growing number of specialized companies will emerge, offering services specifically designed to assess the safety of these models.
While certain prominent LLM developers like Google may meet the requirements to create their own tests, it is likely that these tests will be proprietary and specific to individual developers. This lack of standardized tests makes comparisons across different LLMs, such as Bard and OpenAI, challenging. Additionally, the alignment of incentives between LLM developers and their customers may differ from the incentives of a third-party test developer like Aymara.
By serving as an independent third-party test developer, Aymara can provide objective assessments that prioritize customer interests and facilitate transparency. Their role is to ensure the development and deployment of robust and comparable tests for bias, misinformation, and inaccuracy in LLMs, thereby advancing the collective goal of making artificial intelligence safe for humanity.
AI PRIORI
An unprecedented opportunity exists to develop new machine learning models that prioritize equity and assist changemakers in addressing challenges on a large and rapid scale. AI Priori, designed in collaboration with social sector leaders, recognizes and tackles the issue of information overload within the social sector. By combining proven machine learning technology with community-centered data, AI Priori addresses the limitations faced by changemakers, such as limited tools, time, and capacity.
AI Priori’s approach encompasses three key elements:
1) use of proprietary, community-centered data;
2) attention to transparency and data privacy;
3) focus on systems change.
AI Priori aims to democratize access to AI tools and strives to equip changemakers with the capabilities to address complex challenges effectively. By harnessing the power of machine learning in an equity-centered manner, AI Priori has the potential to revolutionize the social sector and support changemakers in making substantial progress towards social justice and positive systemic change.
Drizzle Health
Drizzle Health’s mission is to build affordable products that provide everyone with quality healthcare. Drizzle Health’s first product, Medupi, helps primary health centers and community health workers diagnose Tuberculosis (TB) without dependencies on highly skilled technicians, a robust supply chain, storage, and large budgets for purchasing state-of-the-art technology consumables. Currently, there are two methods for TB testing in high-burden countries: Smear Microscopy (50% accuracy, $0.5 per test) and Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests (95% accuracy, $15-30 per test). Drizzle Health bridges the gap between the two; a $1 test with over 95% accuracy for TB Drizzle Health’s test will enable national TB programs to control TB in an economically sustainable way, especially for communities that suffer from unending cycles of re-infection. Drizzle Health’s initial target market is India, where over 6 million tests are taken every year, a number slated to grow 6-fold as the country chases TB eradication by 2025.

Cycleau
Cycleau is a revolutionary water treatment system designed to address the need for affordable and accessible solutions in households. It serves a dual purpose, providing effective water treatment and reducing the wastewater footprint.
The primary function of Cycleau is to integrate a point-of-use water treatment system within households. This system effectively treats incoming municipal water, removing various hazardous contaminants like lead, copper, nitrate, total coliforms, and cryptosporidium, among others. By treating water at the point of use, residents are safeguarded against potential water quality issues stemming from underfunded water distribution infrastructure. This decentralized approach ensures that households have access to high-quality water, even in areas where the overall water distribution system might be compromised.
In addition to its water treatment capabilities, Cycleau also plays a significant role in reducing the wastewater burden on households. It accomplishes this by capturing and recycling a portion of greywater, which is then treated to potable standards for reuse within the household. This approach not only conserves water but also alleviates the strain on public wastewater distribution systems. By reducing sewage outputs, overflow rates in these systems are diminished, resulting in improved waterway quality and enhanced environmental health. This, in turn, benefits local aquatic wildlife populations and opens up opportunities for residents to engage in recreational activities that rely on clean and accessible waterways.
Cycleau’s innovative design and functionality make it an effective and sustainable solution for households. By addressing both water treatment and wastewater management challenges, it promotes the well-being of residents, protects the environment, and contributes to the overall improvement of water access and quality in communities.
