Director of Communications
Reports to: President & CEO
Location: Remote US; Washington, DC preferred
Status: Full-Time
Salary Range: $100,000 – $125,000 (commensurate with experience)
Overview of the Role:

As Director of Communications, you will lead Halcyon’s communications function with a clear focus on strengthening our brand, sharpening how we communicate our mission, and translating program outcomes into compelling stories and reports for funders, partners, founders, and ecosystem leaders. This role requires both strategic leadership and strong hands-on execution: you will set the communications vision, build the systems and messaging needed to support it, and produce high-quality written materials that clearly demonstrate Halcyon’s impact.

What We Need:
Strategic Communications & Brand Stewardship
- Develop and implement a comprehensive communication strategy aligned with organizational goals.
- Oversee brand positioning and maintain consistent messaging across all platforms.
- Build Halcyon’s voice on key themes (including but not limited to Climate, Health and EquityTech). Our audience is varied and includes funders, founders and ecosystem leaders.
- Oversee digital engagement efforts and website content.
- Utilize data and insights to drive audience engagement across digital channels. Use this to track performance and refine content strategies based on metrics and analytics.
Team Leadership
- Lead and mentor the communications team, ensuring a collaborative and high-performing environment.
- Manage communications budgets and vendor relationships, ensuring strong stewardship of resources, high-quality deliverables, and alignment with organizational priorities.
- Coach and empower other team members to elevate and deliver Halcyon’s message, including in programs execution, events and conferences.
Thought Leadership
- Define and lead Halcyon’s thought leadership strategy, identifying the core themes, messages, audiences, and channels that will position Halcyon as a leading voice in social entrepreneurship, impact investing, Climate, Health, and EquityTech.
- Develop an annual thought leadership roadmap that aligns organizational priorities, programmatic insights, fellow stories, field trends, executive visibility opportunities, publications, convenings, and digital content.
- Translate Halcyon’s programmatic expertise and fellow outcomes into compelling insights, narratives, and points of view that can be shared across op-eds, reports, speeches, panels, newsletters, social media, earned media, and partner communications,
- Monitor emerging trends and sector conversations to identify timely opportunities for Halcyon to shape dialogue, respond to current issues, and elevate the voices of fellows and leadership.
Media & Public Relations
- Manage press materials and media interviews.
- Build relationships with US and International media outlets and journalists to raise Halcyon’s profile and the profiles of Halcyon founders with entities specific to our sector.
- Prepare Halcyon team for media interviews and external public speaking engagements, including managing the year round conference schedule and pitches for presentations.
Stakeholder Engagement & Partnerships
- Collaborate with internal teams, founders, and external partners to build impactful communication strategies.
- Work closely with funders to coordinate drafts and approvals of any external communications, meeting funder guidelines and setting standard lead time for approvals.
- Prepare deliverables for key Halcyon partners including co-authored press releases, social media communications, and speaker briefs.
- Ensure effective communication within the organization and report on communication impact metrics quarterly as part of our reporting to the Board of Directors.
Who Are You:
- Bachelor’s degree preferably in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field.
- 7-10 years of experience in strategic communications, PR, or marketing. Strong preference for experience in a mission-driven or nonprofit setting and/or working with incubators, accelerators, or other entrepreneurial support organizations.
- Experience with communications in the entrepreneurial and/or impact investing ecosystem required.
- Expertise in digital content management, social media, and using data analytics to refine strategies.
- Proven track record of thought leadership support, including the ability to produce high quality written pieces and conference panel curation for executives and/or an organization.
- Experience managing teams and working cross-functionally with diverse stakeholders.

- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and meet deadlines. Represent Halcyon as another spokesperson at events and convenings to increase our visibility.
- Creative thinker with a passion for social impact and entrepreneurship and interest in learning more about this evolving field.
Schedule and Work Environment:
- 8 hour shift, Standard working hours are 9am – 5pm
- Monday to Friday
- Weekends and evenings as needed
- Remote or Hybrid in Washington, DC
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds, comfortable with standing, climbing stairs, walking and sitting.
- Some domestic and international travel may be required, up to 20%.
