Maria Emilia Cardoso Martinez

Growing up between competitive athletics and long summers immersed in nature, Emilia Cardoso developed both the discipline of an athlete and a deep respect for the natural world from an early age. Years of national-level track and field shaped her resilience and endurance, while her curiosity for living systems led her to pursue microbiology and the study of life in extreme environments. She eventually found the intersection between both paths in biotechnology, applying scientific rigor and perseverance to tackle environmental challenges. As Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Protiva, Emilia leads the development of sustainable pigments derived from extremophile bacteria, designed to replace synthetic dyes in the textile industry and rethink how color is produced at scale. Her work is driven by a clear purpose: to shift the paradigm of sustainability by building materials that work with nature rather than against it.
